What to know when choosing a work coverall?

Although originally made of denim, today work coveralls are made from many types of fabric and colour and can have properties such as cold protection, antistatic properties, electrical insulation, high visibility, chemical resistance, waterproofing, flame resistance and more. In this article we present some background and tips for choosing the right coverall for your needs. What to know when choosing a work coverall?

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF WORK COVERALLS?

The most important reason for wearing uniform coveralls is protection against hazards, including chemical, mechanical, thermal or biological ones. They can also protect against grease, dirt and oil stains. Of course, you should always find out which hazards a particular work coverall protects against, as they are not all the same. Coveralls made of different materials also have different properties.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BIB TROUSERS AND COVERALLS?

Bib trousers are usually made of a light material and are worn over ordinary clothes. Unlike coveralls, they usually do not protect the arms.

Protective work coveralls are most often worn as protective outerwear over your own clothes, usually in a work environment. They can be used in many working environments, such as painting, decorating, machine and factory work, farming and other activities where clothing may be at risk.

SHOULD I CHOOSE BIB TROUSERS OR A COVERALL?

Choose a coverall if you need the maximum possible warmth, wind protection and full-body protection. Because they cover the entire body, coveralls are better suited to colder environments. They insulate well and can help you keep warm when temperatures drop. At the same time, many models are made of breathable fabrics, so they can still provide ventilation when you work in an enclosed environment. Coveralls are very comfortable and, if made with a particular fabric treatment, can help protect most of the body from chemical hazards, water and even flames.

Protective work bib trousers are a more versatile and durable garment and give a greater range of upper-body movement and more air flow around the torso than coveralls. That is why bib trousers are better suited to summer work, while work coveralls come in handier in the transitional or cold months.

Whatever the weather, it is best to wear a long-sleeved T-shirt or sweater and trousers under the coverall, as this base layer on your skin will help prevent unwanted chafing caused by wearing the coverall all day. Coveralls are designed to be worn over ordinary clothes. We recommend that the clothes underneath are made of a light material that does not crease under the coverall. In the cold winter months it is also wise to wear a thermal base layer, which will help keep your body at an optimal temperature.

HOW SHOULD I WASH A PROTECTIVE COVERALL?

Protective work coveralls can usually be washed in a washing machine. First read the care instructions label on the coverall. Always wash coveralls separately from other items of laundry so that chemicals, dirt, pesticides or other harmful substances do not transfer onto other garments. Use an ordinary, mild detergent. If dirt stains remain on the coveralls after washing, you can scrub the wet coveralls by hand with soapy water or a soft scrubbing brush. To extend their service life, it is advisable to turn the coverall inside out and close the zip before washing it.
