What is the difference between a softshell and a hardshell jacket?
WHAT IS A HARDSHELL JACKET?
Hardshell jackets are also known as outershell jackets and refer to a waterproof jacket with a hood. They are sometimes insulated, and are designed to provide light, durable and waterproof breathable protection in rain or snow. The term hardshell is fitting, as the fabric is not very stretchy, has a slightly crisp feel and sound, and is very durable. When comparing hardshell and softshell, you can tell the difference by feeling the fabric and listening for rustling and crackling - a hardshell jacket usually makes a lot more noise than a softshell jacket.
WHAT ARE OUTERSHELL OR HARDSHELL JACKETS USED FOR?
Outershell jackets are used for protection against rain or snow. They are indispensable for work in rainy and windy conditions, work in dust, or any other activity that may be carried out in rain or heavy snow. Many people also use them for hiking and camping. The best outershell jackets are lighter and easier to pack than softshell jackets, so they are the better choice when weight and space matter.
WHAT IS A SOFTSHELL JACKET?
A softshell jacket is a water-resistant, stretchy and breathable jacket that offers protection against light snow and rain. Some softshell jackets have waterproof breathable technology, but most are only water-repellent. They are designed to move with you and keep your body temperature comfortable during high-energy activities. Most softshell jackets have a soft lining or a fleece lining, which provides extra warmth.
WHAT ARE SOFTSHELL JACKETS
USED FOR?
Softshell jackets are used for their stretch, warmth and breathability during outdoor activities. They can be used as an insulating mid layer for snowy weather, and are an excellent choice for everyday wear in cold weather. Softshell jackets are versatile, but often are not as light or waterproof as hardshell or outershell jackets.
SHOULD I CHOOSE A SOFTSHELL OR A HARDSHELL JACKET?
If there is a high likelihood that you will be exposed to rain at work, choose a hardshell jacket. A hardshell jacket provides the waterproof protection and durability you need for outdoor work and rainy weather. Outershell or hardshell jackets are also lighter and easier to pack than softshell jackets, so they are essential equipment for anyone who is on the road a lot.
A softshell jacket is an excellent choice on a dry day. You can also layer a softshell jacket under warmer clothing, including under a hardshell jacket, or on a cold day under a warm winter jacket. Remember that most softshells are reliably water-resistant, so in light rain you will mostly stay dry. But if you plan to spend a lot of time outdoors in winter or rainy weather, we recommend choosing a hardshell jacket.
