Understanding the EN 343 standard - waterproof and breathable protective rainwear
When it comes to dealing with the weather, it is important that workers have the right level of protection. There is a significant difference between a garment that is simply made from waterproof fabric and one that has been manufactured, tested and certified as a waterproof garment. Some "waterproof garments" protect against rain only to a limited extent. Garments labelled "water-repellent" may have been treated so that water runs off the surface, but they are not necessarily protected in places such as zips, seams and pockets.
This is why outdoor workwear and personal protective equipment intended for protection against bad weather are often tested to the EN 343:2019 standard, which measures the water resistance and breathability of protective clothing.
It is worth noting that some professional outdoor garments are tested to different, often stricter standards for resistance to water and weather. Such garments may have the same or better properties than the EN343 standard requires, but they are not necessarily tested to this standard, as they are not intended for use as personal protective equipment.
WHAT DOES THE EN343 STANDARD MEAN?
EN 343 is the European standard for protective clothing that sets the minimum level of protection against wet weather, taking into account the entire construction of the garment in addition to the fabric used.
Products are assessed in two categories; the first rates protection against precipitation, fog and moisture, while the second measures breathability under those specific conditions. In these two categories, protective workwear is then rated from one to three, where three is the highest level of protection and one the lowest. See below for an explanation of the different classes in each category:
Resistance to water penetration
1 - Lowest level of protection against rain
2 - Medium level of protection against rain
3 - Highest level of protection against rain
Breathability
1 - not classified as breathable under the EN343 standard
2 - Medium level of breathability
3 - Highest level of breathability
This rating is shown on the CE label inside the garment, where the EN343 mark is followed by two numbers. For example, an EN343 class 3:3 marking indicates the highest level of water resistance and breathability. When choosing waterproof workwear, consider the tasks your workers perform and the conditions they work in. This will help you determine the most suitable class of clothing for your team.
The standard also checks tensile strength and tear resistance, as durability is crucial if waterproof clothing is to retain its function and last through a demanding working day.
EN343 TEST METHODS: WHICH CLASS OF WATERPROOF CLOTHING DO YOU NEED?
Waterproofness is measured with a hydrostatic pressure test, in which water is applied to the garment under pressure. The water penetration rating indicates the pressure the garment can withstand.
Breathability is tested in accordance with the ISO 11092 standard. A skin model that mimics human skin is used and measures resistance to water vapour, initially expressed as the RET value (Resistance of Evaporation of a Textile). The lower the RET value, the greater the breathability, and so the better the product is rated overall under the EN 343 standard. Waterproof breathable workwear is essential for many workers, as it protects against the elements while keeping the wearer dry and comfortable.
Finally, the tensile strength and tear resistance of all components are tested; they must meet minimum standards to ensure that the garment will last for the expected lifetime of the product. All layers are also tested for their elasticity and their ability to keep their fit after repeated use.
When choosing waterproof, breathable personal protective equipment for your team, take the time to assess their working conditions and select suitable garments. This ensures that your team stays safe and that your investment in workwear is cost-effective. In some conditions, waterproof high-visibility clothing is required so that your workers are safe, comfortable and clearly visible at all times.
When deciding which type of waterproof clothing to invest in, it is a good idea to involve your workers. The choice is wide, from waterproof work jackets to parkas and rain suits or coveralls. Your workers will know best what helps them do their everyday tasks better. It is also important that outdoor workwear fits properly. Men's waterproof clothing may not be comfortable and may not do its job effectively if worn by a female member of the team. To choose the right garment for each worker, consult the manufacturer's size guide.
MAINTAINING WATERPROOF WORKWEAR TO ENSURE WORKER PROTECTION
Personal protective equipment, including outdoor workwear, must always be maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions. Garments should be stored in dry, well-ventilated spaces when not in use and checked regularly for signs of wear. For such garments to be fully effective in bad weather, they must fit well and be fastened to reduce the chance of water getting in.
THE IMPORTANCE OF SUITABLE WATERPROOF WORKWEAR
When choosing workwear, make sure you select garments with the right level of protection for the function and type of work you do. If workers are constantly exposed to wet and windy weather without adequate protection, there are several risks. Workers may experience serious discomfort and suffer from cold or dampness. This can affect performance, productivity and morale, and lead to an increased number of sick days.
Although it is not the only method of testing the water resistance and breathability of garments, health and safety managers often opt for garments marked EN343, to assure themselves and their colleagues that they are certified to a recognised safety standard.
