THE STORY OF SAINT NICHOLAS

 

Once upon a time there lived a kind-hearted bishop named Nicholas. He came from a wealthy family. Many different legends are told about him, but the best known is the one about how he saved three young girls from slavery. Their father, a farmer, was far too poor to support his three daughters. In those days a father had to offer his daughters' future husbands something valuable – a dowry. The greater the value of the dowry, the better the chance that a young woman would find a good husband. Without a dowry, a woman would most likely never marry.

Without a dowry, the daughters of this poor farmer were doomed to be sold into slavery. When Nicholas heard about it, in the middle of the night he threw golden balls into the stockings and shoes they had left by the fire to dry. 

In this way he saved the young girls from slavery and made it possible for them to find good husbands. That is how Nicholas became Saint Nicholas and began the tradition of giving gifts to children.

 

 

SAINT NICHOLAS' FAVOURITE PRODUCTS
