CI standard - winter work boots with protection against cold
WHAT DOES THE CI MARKING MEAN?
What does it mean if your work shoe is marked CI? On safety footwear, CI stands for "Cold Insulation". Safety work shoes with this marking have been tested for work in cold conditions and provide insulation against the cold for 30 minutes at -20 ℃.
The CI test method involves placing the whole shoe in a cold chamber, while a temperature probe measures the drop in temperature inside the shoe. This simulation measures the heat retained in the work shoe in cold conditions. The standard test is set at -17 °C (with a permitted tolerance of 2 °C), and the temperature drop inside must be less than 10 °C. This test can be modified down to -40 °C with the same temperature-drop parameters. This marking means the footwear is certified to keep your feet warm in cold conditions and is an ideal standard to specify for the colder months.
WHEN SHOULD THEY BE USED?
- if your work requires you to enter cold stores
- in winter, when it is very cold
- for work where drastic temperature changes are frequent
WHY ARE YOUR FEET COLD? AND WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR FEET WHEN THEY GET TOO COLD?
Cold feet cause many problems, and the best advice is to wear the right clothing, socks and footwear in the first place, because once your feet are cold, they are hard to warm up again.
It is important to know that the feeling of cold feet is one of the body's normal responses to lower temperatures. When you are in a cold environment, your body constricts the blood vessels in your extremities to reduce the heat the body loses. It focuses on preserving heat and blood flow around the vital organs and the most important parts of the body, i.e. the brain and the heart. If you are exposed to low temperatures for a longer time, reduced blood flow can lead to reduced oxygen saturation in the feet, which can turn them bluish.
If your feet get too cold, you can aggravate existing foot problems such as plantar fasciitis (and other symptoms of sore feet) and reduce circulation. You can even get frostnip or frostbite.
