Under Slovenian legislation, every worker who regularly works at height, at depth or in confined spaces must use personal protective equipment that protects them from falling and in the event of a fall. Workers must complete a course in safe work at height and know how to use the necessary personal protective equipment.

## ACCESS SYSTEM FOR VERTICAL AND HORIZONTAL CONFINED SPACES

Systems for protecting users when entering and exiting vertical and horizontal confined spaces are used in places that are large enough and configured for access by at least one operator. In these environments, because of difficulties with entry, exit and rescue, especially in emergencies, the risk of serious injury or death is very high. These environments present additional risk factors due to the possible presence of toxic substances, flammable gases, vapours or hazardous conditions such as oxygen deficiency.

Such spaces include in particular: wastewater basins, pumping stations, manholes, silos, boilers, tanks, pipelines, vessels and machine cavities.

Confined spaces come in many forms and are found in various industries and other work areas. It is advisable to treat unfamiliar areas and their internal environment as a confined space and to take all the necessary safety measures.

In practice, safe entry into and exit from confined spaces also requires the use of other personal protective equipment for the head, eyes, face, hearing, hands, feet and body, as well as portable gas detectors, ladders, scaffolding and fall protection equipment.
